ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL DIMENSIONS IN THE "DO NOT LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND" ARTICLE BY ROBERTO SAVIANO


"Leave no one behind" is the title of an article by Roberto Saviano that appeared in the "l'antitaliano" section of the Espresso magazine in the date of 20 April 2020.

With this title, the writer Saviano makes an act of request as an attempt to strengthen the "collective face" of Italy as a country in a more inclusive direction in order to be more in line with the "collectivism" dimension with a "truly conscientious and inclusive " actions for all those who live in Italy. Saviano asks that this "we" be truthful in this dramatic period of the country in order to emphasize belonging to the fate of the same country, drastically reducing the distinction between "in-group" and "out-group members in this moment of crisis "present in a deleterious way in Italian society. In this article,Saviano is asking to Italy to extend its "national" family concession in a broader sense to be able to further enhance its need to enhance its "collective" positive face.

In this article, the questions asked by Saviano are all forms of threats to the government's desire to protect his negative face, which makes the choice to speak about some issues and not others. The writer Saviano makes an "appeal" that could be translated as "I am willing to lose the protection of my negative face (need for autonomy and not to be hindered in one's own intimate space of life) to try to get some more element of face collective for these social categories and for an increase in the "collectivism" dimension in the country. In addition, in this way we try to obtain a reduction of uncertainty in the Italian social space to provide hope in this period of health crisis for a adherence to a "long-term temporal orientation" in order to be "prepared" for better or for worse in the next circumstances.

Saviano's article takes shape with this initial statement: "It is time to ask loudly who governs us to govern us with justice and not to leave anyone behind."

The concept of justice also represents a way to be in tune with the "individualism" dimension because you have a "conscientious self" and the transgression of the rules must create a feeling of guilt and not as often happens in Italy of the "shameful" type ". This is a way to create a feeling of greater control of one's life in harmony with the "satisfied" dimension. Justice reinforces our protection and autonomy in terms of a negative face while the concept of "leaving no one behind" contains the intention to enhance the need for the collective face of the whole nation without anyone included. In practice, the writer Saviano's request is to implement a conscientious "collectivism".

Saviano's article begins with a description of today's context as a form of "agency" on the historical situation in order to recreate the best conditions for the writer to implement his vision of reality. In fact, this situation is described "Italy has been in lockdown for a long time and, in most regions, it has been without answers and without prospects". This confinement offers no answers and has no prospects for many regions and therefore becomes a form of threat to the need to protect the negative face of many Italians who do not want to lose face for the incompetence of the government.

The media discourse focuses only on the numbers of swabs made, the inpatients, the positives, deceased creating only a feeling of confusion and panic because the media are in tune with the dimension of "weak avoidance of uncertainty" with their adherence to the ambiguity and chaos, in which citizens are perceived as incompetent, the world is made of "out-group" and "in-group" with an "us" in the world of media that is almost "unconscious" and since they have the true power in hand adhere to a cultural dimension of the "long term orientation" type because what is good or bad depends on the circumstances creating de facto in many sections of the population a feeling of helplessness and where everyone is forced to adhere to a dimension of like "tied" making it increasingly difficult to remember positive emotions. For Saviano, a clear speech is missing on what the government is doing now to make public health safe. In other words, it is a request for the protection of the "collective" negative face of the country which is requested by Saviano to offer a crucial adhesion to a "strong avoidance of uncertainty". The questions raised by the writer concern "how health will change; how to protect the health body and patients in the event of a forthcoming emergency? In essence, the government's responses are not at all in tune with the needs to protect the negative face of the citizen who must suffer these threats in terms of ass the protection of its negative side because the government understood as the collective face of the institutions finds itself largely in the dimension of "weak avoidance of uncertainty" because it is at ease in chaos. Later inside the article comes the moment of Saviano's appeals, which are a moment in which the writer is ready to lose his negative face and perhaps also to incur costs to his positive face for the simple fact that most likely there will be no answers to these questions concerning "the safety of medical personnel, foreign people who work in the fields without rights". Furthermore, Saviano adds another appeal regarding the granting of Italian citizenship to all those who were born in Italy to foreign parents. In these appeals made by Saviano we try to obtain benefits to the need for recognition of the positive face of foreign laborers through an expansion of benefits towards the categories of health personnel. In practice it is an operation to extend benefits towards our "in-group" of belonging which is requested by Saviano also with his appeal to the release of Italian citizenship to all those born in Italy as a way to enhance their need to reduce the costs incurred so far in terms of the lack of recognition for their positive face with the lack of citizenship for all these people. This crisis is the right time for Saviano to increase a strong "in-group" feeling within the country to eliminate the many years of "out-group" as the only answer offered to these "new Italians". For Saviano where there are citizens more citizens than others, that is, with greater protection of their right of face, both negative and positive, the policy understood as the collective face of the institutions, does not contemplate the possibility of protecting the negative face of the weakest or foreigners. , does not do this to protect the penultimate (Italians in difficulty) but only to protect itself. In other words, politics wants to remain in the enhancement of its positive face through the non-recognition of rights or responses to remain a central actor on the social scene of the country. Ultimately, for politics, giving a negative face to both foreigners and the weakest means a significant reduction or costs to be incurred for their perennial need to act as themselves bearers of a "positive face" for the good of others. Instead, making others pay costs in terms of losing face is a big problem for those who adhere to a cultural dimension of weak avoidance of uncertainty. The policy that does not explain to Italian citizens why foreign laborers are "out-group" because almost slaves, just as a foreign doctor cannot have a document are the result of the same policy, which will never tell Italian citizens how to get them out from confinement. The pandemic reveals that when politics does not act for some de facto it does not act for anyone. In a brutal way it can be argued that this policy poses a threat to the collective face of all Italians and not only to those who feel they are "out-groups" of Italian society. Many Italians continue to think that this separation is the best way to protect their need for a negative face in the face of those significant costs paid by the population without the possibility of obtaining any form of repair for the absence of protection offered to the need for " negative face "of the Italians.
